For Kaiser Permanente Employees & Physicians

Volunteer Opportunities

Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit currently has two databases to assist you if you wish to volunteer. The first is for those of you who would like to sign up to volunteer for disaster relief efforts supported by Kaiser Permanente. The second is the Kaiser Permanente Volunteer Website which will allow you to search for volunteer opportunities in your community.

Disaster Relief Volunteer Information

In 2005, following the devastation of the tsunami in the Indian Ocean, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the United States, and the earthquake in Pakistan, over 2,000 Kaiser Permanente employees and physicians signed up to volunteer to help wherever and whenever they were needed.  Should Kaiser Permanente be asked to respond to future natural or man-made disasters, this volunteer database will be vital in identifying employees and physicians with the needed skills to respond effectively.  If you wish to be considered for service of this type, please fill out the requested information and register as a potential volunteer.

Access the Kaiser Permanente Disaster Relief Volunteer Database by clicking here*. We know that some Kaiser Permanente physicians and employees do not have easy access to the internal Kaiser Permanente Web system, so we are also providing a form that you can fill out and return via e-mail, fax, interoffice or U.S. mail. To return this form by e-mail, please send it to: Kp-Cares-For-Communities@kp.org.

Kaiser Permanente's Volunteer Website…Here For You.

As a Kaiser Permanente employee or physician, the work you do is fundamental to Kaiser Permanente’s mission to improve the health of our communities in a variety of ways.

The Kaiser Permanente volunteer web site will allow you to find opportunities to volunteer at local nonprofit organizations.  It will also allow you to communicate to other employees and learn more about Kaiser Permanente’s work to improve the health of our communities.

Upon completion of the Hands On volunteer leadership training, KP’s web-based volunteer management system will also help you to manage volunteer projects.

Whether your interests and capabilities are in the areas of children and families, seniors, the arts, environment, education, hunger and poverty, homelessness, animal welfare, mentoring, web design, event planning, carpentry, or financial management, the site will allow you to create a personal profile, and will assist you in finding community service opportunities that match not only your interests and skills, but your schedule and preferences for episodic, regular, individual, family or team-based activities.  Local opportunities can be accessed through the “Get Involved” tab.  A special emphasis will be placed on volunteer activities contributing to the ongoing rebuilding efforts in the Gulf Coast, and this information can be accessed through the “Additional Opportunities” links.  The web site is accessible through any computer with internet access at www.kpcares.org.

Logging On and Getting Started

You will need your NUID # as the password to log on to the volunteer site.  If you don’t know your NUID#, you can look it up on our intranet site by clicking on the following link:

http://wpsapp33.crdc.kp.org/NUID/NUIDLookUp.jsp

This site is not accessible from outside computers, but only through Kaiser Permanente’s intranet.

If you have any difficulties logging on, or any other problems accessing or using the site, send an email to KP-Cares-For-Communities@kp.org so that we can try to correct the problem.  We want to make this as simple and rewarding a process as possible and your continuing feedback is important to us.  So, log onto www.kpcares.org, fill out your profile, and find out how to volunteer in a way that is meaningful to you!

Kaiser Permanente Partnership with National Hands On Network

Hands On is a nonprofit network of organizations that bring people together to strengthen communities through meaningful volunteer action.  It is a growing network of more than 50 affiliates and 1,000,000 volunteers, changing communities in and outside the United States.  The Hands On Network creates and manages nearly 50,000 projects each year through local volunteer networks.  From building wheelchair ramps in San Francisco to teaching reading in Atlanta, to rebuilding homes and lives in the Gulf Coast communities, Hands On works to improve communities with the people who live and work there.  To support, promote and facilitate community service, Kaiser Permanente has become a corporate member of the National Hands On Network.  For more information, visit their web site at http://www.handsonnetwork.org.

Three focus areas of the KP Hands On partnership are:

Children and Education: Learning and Play Spaces.

Transformational projects and partnerships at underserved schools and recreation centers will enliven and enhance their physical space and learning models and nurture and teach the children they serve.

Health and Wellness: Healthy Spaces.

Projects will provide advocacy and accessibility in partnership with citizens with physical disabilities, including war veterans and citizens displaced by hurricanes and other natural disasters, promoting increased independence.  Kaiser Permanente will also develop opportunities to support the health care safety net in our communities and along the Gulf Coast, where the health care infrastructure has been severely compromised.

Environment: Green Spaces.

Projects will build or renovate parks, green spaces and natural areas, including areas impacted by Hurricane Katrina, to provide locations for communities to gather and share a common experience.

Through the partnership with the Hands On Network and its corporate partners, Kaiser Permanente seeks to help you be the change you want to see in communities.

Volunteer Leadership Development

Volunteerism educates, helps to heal social wounds, and encourages understanding and awareness.  Effective volunteer leaders are recognized as a powerful force for solving complex societal problems.  Physicians and employees who want to increase their volunteer leadership skills are encouraged to complete the Hands On Volunteer Leadership Training Modules online at www.handsonleaders.org .

After completing this training, you will have access to the resources necessary to organize and manage successful community projects, inspire and engage peers and colleagues in meaningful, high impact service, and magnify the power of one person to motivate many others.

* This information is accessible only to Kaiser Permanente physicians and employees through Kaiser Permanente computers or remote access.
