HEATHER GOMES, a single mother, had relatively few job skills when she enrolled in a two-year course to become a certified radiology technologist at Kaiser Permanente’s School of Allied Health Sciences in Richmond, California. After earning her certification, she got an X-ray technologist job at Kaiser Permanente, and three years later, returned to the school while working weekends and some evenings, this time to get her certification in sonography. She now performs ultrasound examinations of babies and adults. She says, “It feels good to say I have accomplished this, and this is something that I have done for myself and my son.”
