Educational theatreOhioIn 2005, Kaiser Permanente Ohio Region launched an Educational Theatre Program based on a new model for promoting health through theatre. Collaborating with schools, community-based organizations, and other nonprofit groups, Kaiser Permanente creates live productions to inspire children, teens and adults to make better choices for their health and their well-being. The Cleveland Municipal School District is a key partner in the Educational Theatre Program. The program trains youth actors to be health education "ambassadors" to large audiences. Rather than hiring professional actors, Kaiser Permanente Ohio Region hires students from the Cleveland Municipal School District, who perform for schools in that district. These peer actors learn and perform age-appropriate, evidence-based productions developed by Kaiser Permanente. Two productions are underway for the 2006-2007 school year, including “Secrets,” which educates students about the dangers of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases by looking into the lives of people impacted by the virus. “The Amazing Food Detective” educates elementary school-aged children about the importance of good nutrition and exercise. It is designed to both entertain and inspire students to make healthier food choices and to exercise. The Educational Theatre Program is done exclusively in the city of Cleveland, where the convergence of lifestyle-driven health risks, community financial barriers, and a school system daunted with challenges make innovative health-related interventions an imperative. |
