Partnerships

In the past 10 years, senior executives and managers of Fortune 1000 companies across the United States have become increasingly aware that domestic violence is a major problem that affects their employees. Most realize that domestic violence has a harmful effect on their organization’s insurance, medical costs and bottom-line performance. The National Business Group on Health states that “heightened awareness of the issue’s impact on their own employee populations has led employers to join with public health advocates in recognizing that IPV is no longer simply a personal issue.”

Some of our major employer groups, like PG&E, Macy’s West, Wells Fargo, and Marriott, have approached Kaiser Permanente to ask for help with domestic violence prevention in their workforce.

The following describe some of the partnerships now underway between Kaiser Permanente and major employer groups:

The Corporate Alliance to End Partner Violence (CAEPV) is featuring Kaiser Permanente as the " CAEPV Member of the Month" in November and December 2006.

CAEPV is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the costs and consequences of partner violence at work -and eliminating it altogether. CAEPV has member organization reaching over one million employees across the United States. PG&E and Kaiser Permanente are working together to raise awareness about domestic violence prevention. During the month of October, the Kaiser Permanente silentWitness display, which contains stories from Kaiser Permanente employees who have survived domestic violence, was shown at the PG&E Corporate offices in San Francisco . In addition, an informational brochure about domestic violence, co-branded by both PG&E and Kaiser Permanente was sent to 20,000 PG&E employees. This was accompanied by a letter from PG&E Senior VP of Human Resources about the range of resources (including those for domestic violence) available to PG&E employees through the PG&E Employee Assistance Program. In addition, an informational lunch seminar on women's health issues was given by Dr. Tracy Flanagan, Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Kaiser Permanente.

During the past 2 years, Macy’s and Kaiser Permanente have been working together to raise awareness about domestic violence. To educate a broad audience about the prevalence of domestic violence, Macy’s stores throughout Northern California are exhibiting portions of the Silent Witness display (a powerful life size poster display that shares first person stories from Kaiser Permanente employees who are survivors of domestic violence). When the large display is being shown at a Kaiser Permanente hospital or clinic, the nearby Macy's has the smaller display. An employee "rally" with presentations by the Macy’s store manager and a Kaiser Permanente physician highlight the health and workplace issues associated with domestic violence and the resources available for employees. Co-branded domestic violence informational brochures, and posters, as well as materials from the local advocacy agencies are made available. The display has been shown at all 35 Northern California outpatient clinics and more than 40 Macy’s stores since 2004.
