Kaiser Permanente Pilot Reduces Cardiac Deaths by 73 Percent
Kaiser Permanente has substantially improved the heart attack survival rate for its members in Colorado through an innovative program that links coronary artery disease patients, and teams of pharmacists, nurses, primary care doctors and cardiologists, with an electronic health record and advanced clinical care registry. The results of this pilot were demonstrated March 27 at the Washington, D.C., briefing, "Reforming the Health Care Delivery System: A Team Approach," cosponsored by the Alliance for Health Reform, Kaiser Permanente and the AFL-CIO.

Kaiser Permanente Colorado has significantly reduced the mortality rate for patients with heart disease, which is the nation’s number one killer for both women and men. Using team-based medical best practices and computer-supported care registries, doctors and clinical care teams reduced overall mortality by 76 percent and cardiac mortality by 73 percent.

These strategies made Kaiser Permanente’s Southern California region the national leader in breast cancer screening rates in 2008.

Kaiser Permanente’s Southern California region has increased the use of preventive cancer screenings and effectively encouraged improved maintenance of cholesterol by coordinating care across all who touch patients lives and integrating incentives and information technology. The proactive office encounter program fosters cooperation among providers: Clinical care teams composed of doctors, nurses, medical assistants and other staff work together to identify opportunities to engage patients and provide support and encouragement for positive action across the continuum of health care services.

Independent surveys of Kaiser Permanente employees have shown significant improvements in worker engagement, satisfaction and performanceincluding reduced workplace injuries—among workers who are involved in LMP activities.
