To Dr. Matsuda...
Dear Dr. Matsuda,
This is an overdue thank you for your excellent work. It's now been five weeks since you performed
arthroscopic surgery on my hip, and I'm doing extremely well, especially given how much damage you
found in the joint. I continue to be in very little pain, and am progressing nicely - beginning to
put weight on that leg and upping the tension on my exercise bike. I've increased the tension on the
bike four times in the last week, and continue to exercise on it every day for a full 30 minutes,
as I have since I got home from the surgery.
I also want to take this opportunity to thank you for an unexpectedly easy and comfortable time. This was
the first major surgery I've had, so I was a bit apprehensive as I began this process. I knew I would be in
good hands when my surgeon, Dr. Stefano Bini recommended that you perform the arthroscopic version of this
hip surgery, but I was very pleased after meeting you at our initial consultation.
At that consultation I was evaluating the arthroscopic version of the hip surgery, as well as the prospect of
traveling to Los Angeles from Oakland for the procedure. I was also very invested in getting it done quickly
since I need both hips fixed, which meant a long recovery time away from my design studio.
You and your staff gave me all the time I needed that day and clarified everything I needed to know to make my
decision. That it was an out-patient procedure amazed me. I was relieved to be able to schedule a surgery date
only a few weeks in the future, before I left the room that day. That initial contact was tremendously reassuring.
That feeling of being in cheerful, expert, and compassionate hands continued throughout my surgical experience.
From the pre-op appointments the day before the surgery, through check-out after the operation, I knew I was
getting the best possible care from the some of the kindest people I've encountered in health care (and I've
always been very happy with my care from my Kaiser doctors and staff). Everyone who worked with me on the day of
my surgery was especially thoughtful, efficient, and reassuring.
Whenever I was in the LA Medical Center - for the consult, the pre-op appointments, and the surgery - I was struck
by how pleasant, helpful, and forthcoming everyone was. It certainly helped relieve many of the apprehensions I had
about my first surgery, and I very much appreciated it.
Your commitment to responding quickly and personally to my questions throughout the process helped me tremendously,
and your call the day after the surgery was particularly appreciated. Our conversation gave me a better idea of what
you encountered and what you did during the surgery, and it gave me a chance to clarify what I needed to do to ensure a good recovery.
This has been an almost delightful experience - not a phrase I'd have thought I would use to describe hip
surgery, but certainly true. I'll be in touch with you in a few months to schedule surgery for my other hip. I'm
looking forward to being fully mobile and pain free soon.
Thank you again, Dr. Matsuda, for a happy surgical outcome, and for my ease and comfort throughout the process!
Warm regards,
[patient's name]
