What is minimally invasive surgery?
Minimally invasive surgeries use small incisions in the skin through which specialized instruments are inserted. A small video camera is usually inserted so the surgeon can see what he or she is doing by watching the camera’s image on a video monitor. By contrast, traditional surgeries involve large incisions to open up the affected area.
What are the advantages of minimally invasive surgeries?
Because the incisions are smaller with minimally invasive techniques, patients have less blood loss, less scarring, and less post-operative pain. Often, minimally invasive surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis. Many can be done under local anesthesia. Patients can usually resume their normal activities sooner then with traditional surgery.
Patients should discuss the pros and cons of choosing minimally invasive surgery with their physicians, because although these advantages are generally true, each case may vary.
