Recognized for the article “Trial of an Asthma Education Program in an Inner-City Pediatric Emergency Department,” which evaluated the effect of an asthma education and management intervention for Medicaid-insured children.
In the intervention group, the adult accompanying the child received basic asthma education, a written asthma management plan, and prescriptions for both quick-relief and long-term control medication. The control group received routine care.
Data on functional severity, use of asthma controller medication and the need for crisis care were gathered. Results indicated that the intervention improved use of asthma controller medication. The intervention did not affect the rate of hospitalization and Emergency Department visits. (Pediatric Asthma, Allergy and Immunology 2004;17:107-115.)
Dr. Farber’s current projects include a clinical trial of a behaviorally based cotinine-feedback intervention to reduce second hand smoke exposure for children with asthma, and a study of African Americans, asthma, genetics, and environment.
