Miguel never went to a doctor unless he was really sick. But that was before Dr. Carlos Garcia visited the winery where Miguel worked. Dr. Garcia went as part of Kaiser Permanente’s Field of Dreams program, created especially for members at local wineries who aren’t taking advantage of Kaiser Permanente’s many screening and preventive programs.

“For some of our Latino members, the idea of prevention and coming in when they’re well is a new concept,” says Dr. Garcia, a family practitioner at the Santa Rosa Medical Center. “They only go to the doctor when they’re sick.”

So on his days off, Dr. Garcia goes to them.

With great warmth and understanding, he talks about the importance of preventive care and helps perform screenings for everything from diabetes to high blood pressure. He and his dedicated team set up appointments or additional screenings -- which explains why Miguel is scheduled for his first-ever screening for colon cancer and follow-up care for his diabetes. He provides the same services for non-members and connects them with community resources for follow-up care, if needed.
