There are some mighty happy campers in the Fresno area thanks to Peter Yao, MD, Dermatology department.

Take the Boy Scouts, for example. Ryan Garcia and his fellow scouts were all looking forward to summer camp when they learned they’d need a physical exam in order to attend. Many boys found they were unable to get in to see their own doctors on such short notice. Luckily for the troop, Ryan’s mom, Karen Garcia, is also Dr. Yao’s medical assistant.

On learning of the scouts’ dilemma, Dr. Yao volunteered to perform the required physicals, at no cost to the boys. To Dr. Yao, it was a small favor. Not so to the boys. “Without Dr. Yao, some of these boys wouldn’t have been able to go to camp,” says Karen. “This way, everyone went and had a great time.”

Then there’s “Boot Camp for New Dads.” Dr. Yao is one of the most enthusiastic volunteers in this highly successful nationwide program that helps prepare first-time fathers for the challenges of parenthood. He enjoys being part of such a unique gathering: “You’d think when these men get together they’d talk about sports or cars, but instead they are intensely focused on learning to care for their new babies.”

In workshops conducted by men for men, “Veterans” help “Rookies” master tricky new-dad skills like changing diapers, and much more. Even more important, they learn about the vital role dads play in a child’s life and how they can build strong, loving families.

Dr. Yao says it is extremely rewarding to be part of this work. “I believe anything we can do to strengthen our families and our communities is worth doing.”
