When you look up the word “caring” in a dictionary, you’ll likely see the name Sarah Beekley, MD included in the definition. A hospital-based pediatrician, caring for children from infancy through adolescence, Dr. Beekley’s compassion and warmth shine through to her young patients. “She exudes caring and kids just love her,” says fellow pediatrician Jason Clark, MD.

Dr. Beekley also cares deeply about the wellness of the medical staff. As Chief of Physician Wellness for the Redwood City Medical Center and Regional Chair of the Chiefs of the Professional Satisfaction and Wellness Committees, she works with the committees to coordinate wellness activities that promote personal health and professional satisfaction, such as physician health fairs, a mentoring program, picnics, and dinners.

And for Dr. Beekley, giving back is a vital part of a full and rewarding life. She encourages volunteerism and recently set an example by putting her skills to work as a pediatrician, fund-raiser, and educator when she traveled to help victims of the Southeast Asia tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.

Closer to home, on any given weekend, you’ll find Dr. Beekley teaching a class, volunteering at a health fair, or reading books to children at a local mall, in addition to her role as a busy mom and wife. (Dr. Beekley is pictured with daughter Lauren.)

“Volunteering is an amazing way to help us find meaning in medicine,” says Dr. Beekley.
