Spisak, she felt relief for the first time in months; not just because of his expert medical care, but even more so because of his kindness and concern.
“Dr. Spisak balances his outstanding technical skills as a spine surgeon with his humanity,” says Dr. Harley Goldberg, director of spine care services at the San Jose Medical Center. “His caring behavior towards patients is the epitome of what a true healer is all about.”
Recently, when he was helping physical therapists get one of his patients up for a post-op walk, she became sick to her stomach. Dr. Spisak quickly ran for towels, and then stayed with the staff to help them clean his patient and get her settled back into a fresh bed.
“This is a job that could easily have been done by someone else,” says Physician Assistant Meghan Kelly. “But Dr. Spisak doesn’t look at things that way.” “When it comes to patient care, I believe in doing whatever needs to be done,” says Dr. Spisak.
“It never occurs to me that something might not be my job. You can have a great surgical outcome, but if people aren’t treated well, it reflects on their overall impression of their health care.”
