Geoffrey Sewell, MD, FACP was named president and executive medical director of the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group in 2007. HPMG is Kaiser Permanente’s physician organization and the largest medical group practice in the state. Dr. Sewell oversees the medical care delivered by HPMG’s 420 physicians to Kaiser Permanente’s 222,000 members in Hawaii. Dr. Sewell began his Kaiser Permanente career in 2000 as a staff hospitalist at the Moanalua Medical Center on Oahu. He became chief of continuing care in 2001, and was named chief of hospital specialties for the medical group in 2005.

Prior to joining HPMG, Dr. Sewell was a medical director with Legacy Health System in Portland, Ore., from 1997 – 2000. He completed his internal medicine residency at Legacy Good Samaritan and Emanuel hospitals in Portland, and was chief resident for internal medicine from 1995 – 96. Dr. Sewell received his medical degree in 1992 from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, where he served as president of his class. He holds a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry from Pacific Union College in Angwin, Calif.

He is board certified by both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Care and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Sewell received the Oliver M. Nisbitt Teaching Award from Oregon Health Sciences University Medicine Class of 2001 and the Faculty Teaching Award from the Legacy Emanuel and Good Samaritan Hospitals’ Residency Program in 2000.

Dr. Sewell is married with twin girls.
