The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Duke University Global Health Institute early last week released new forecasts on obesity in America, warning that nearly 42 percent of Americans may end up obese by 2030 (up from 36 percent in 2010), given current trends. The forecast sounded a resounding alarm about the nation’s health and cast a spotlight on the overabundance of environments that promote cheap junk food and fast-food options known to contribute to obesity.

Almost everyone has a closet, garage or even an office in need of some spring cleaning. Kaiser Permanente and Goodwill Southern California have joined forces for the sixth year to commemorate Earth Day with a region-wide waste and donation drive. This year, the e-waste and donation campaign includes more than 20 Kaiser Permanente Southern California facilities from Bakersfield to San Diego.

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, in partnership with the state of Hawaii Narcotics Enforcement Division and Attorney General’s Office, announces drug take-back days taking place in April at Kaiser Permanente clinics on the Big Island. The drug take-back days offer the community the opportunity to properly dispose of medications that are either expired or not being used in an effort to prevent prescription drug abuse or improper disposal.

The Kaiser Permanente Fontana Medical Center is starting 2012 on a green note as it goes live with solar panels. Installed on the roof of one of the medical center's two parking structures, the solar panels make the Fontana facility one of the area's first major medical centers to receive a significant amount of its energy from the sun.
