J. Eugene Grigsby III, PhD, has served on the boards of Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. since April 2004. He serves on the Audit and Compliance Committee, the Community Benefit Committee and the Governance, Accountability and Nominating Committee, and also serves on the Executive Advisory Board of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Mid-Atlantic States, Inc. Since 2002, he has served as president and chief executive officer of the National Health Foundation, a Los Angeles-based organization that seeks to improve and enhance the health of the underserved by developing and supporting innovative programs that can become independently viable, systemic solutions to gaps in health care access and delivery.
Prior to assuming this position, Grigsby was a professor of urban planning and director of the Advanced Policy Institute at UCLA’s School of Public Policy and Social Research. He also founded and was president of The Planning Group, an urban planning and management consulting firm. Grigsby led consulting engagements for the UCLA Medical Center, the California Hospital Medical Center, and many other government and private sector clients throughout the United States and Canada. He is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in urban development strategies, receiving awards from Stanford University, Occidental College and the University of North Carolina.
Grigsby co-edited Residential Apartheid: The American Legacy, and co-authored Regions That Work: How Cities and Suburbs Can Grow Together. As a past member of the Los Angeles Times Board of Advisors, he wrote a regular column on economic issues.
Currently, Grigsby also serves on the boards of the California Hospital Medical Center, Watts Health Charities and Occidental College. He received his PhD from the University of California at Los Angeles.
