J. Neal Purcell has served on the boards of Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. since July 2003. He serves as chair of the Audit and Compliance Committee, and is a member of the Compensation Committee, the Finance Committee and Executive Committee, and also serves on the board of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Georgia, Inc. Purcell retired from KPMG LLP in January 2002, having joined the organization as an accountant following his graduation from Emory University in 1963. He was admitted to the partnership in 1972, was a member of the firm’s management committee and its board of directors, and also served as the managing partner for the Northwest and the Southeast regions, and as the firm’s vice chairman in charge of national audit practice operations in New York.

Purcell has chaired the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the Metropolitan Atlanta Salvation Army Board of Advisors, the United Way Campaign of Metropolitan Atlanta, the Atlanta Association for the Developmentally Disabled, the Atlanta Athletic Club, the Georgia Heart Fund campaign, and several other not-for-profit fundraising efforts. He is a member of the board of directors and past president of the Atlanta Rotary Club; a member of the board of trustees of Emory University, serving on its finance and investment committees, and as chair of the committee on executive compensation and conflict of interest; and serves on the board of Emory Healthcare.

Purcell was a charter member of Gov. Sonny Perdue’s Commission for a New Georgia, a small group of business leaders who were asked by then-Gov. Perdue to develop new processes and procedures to improve efficiency in state government. In that capacity, he chaired a special task force appointed to review and make recommendations to improve the transportation system in the state of Georgia. He is a longtime member of Dunwoody United Methodist Church and presently serves as chair of its Staff Parish Relations Committee.

Purcell also serves on the board and as chair of the compensation committee of Southern Company, and on the board and as chair of the audit committee of Synovus Corp. He served on the board of Dollar General Corp. until its 2007 sale to KKR Corp. Purcell is a member of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
