About Kaiser Permanente

Facts and Statistics: Kaiser Permanente Northwest (Oregon/Washington)

Oregon & Southwest Wash.  Clark County, Wash.

CLARK COUNTY

Overview
Kaiser Permanente's roots were planted in Clark County more than 60 years ago when industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and Dr. Sidney Garfield's innovative prepaid health plan was set up to provide high quality, affordable health care to shipyard workers and their families.

In 1942, the Northern Permanente Foundation Hospital was built in Vancouver to serve this newly arriving population. After World War II ended and the shipyards closed, enrollment in the health plan was opened to the public. The hospital in Vancouver then became the first Kaiser Permanente hospital in the Pacific Northwest, serving members until 1959 when Bess Kaiser Medical Center opened in Portland.
