With hunger in America reaching its highest level in 14 years, Kaiser Permanente has quadrupled the amount it invests in programs to promote healthy eating during difficult economic times. In 2009, Kaiser Permanente approved $2.1 million in grants and donations to nonprofit organizations that provide access to healthy foods at food banks and pantries, and that help boost participation in federal nutrition programs. The health care organization's grants in this area are up from $430,000 in 2008 and $480,000 in 2007.

In collaboration with the Baltimore Downtown Partnership and the City of Baltimore Health Department, Kaiser Permanente's City Plaza Medical Office Building opened a weekly farmers market for member of the Hopkins Plaza community on July 24, 2009.

The Watts Healthy Farmers Market is party ready. Decked out with row upon row of beautiful, fresh fruit and bushels of vegetables, the Market will kick off its two-year anniversary celebration today when Kaiser Permanente presents an $80,000 grant to the Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los Angeles (SEE-LA). The Watts Healthy Farmers Market is operated by SEE-LA as one of its nonprofit community development activities. With today’s presentation, Kaiser Permanente has now provided more than $286,000 in grants to SEE-LA since 2007 for programs that improve access to healthy food choices.

The eco-friendly design and construction of the new building demonstrates Kaiser Permanente's commitment to the environment and community health. Environmentally responsible materials were used throughout the facility. These include carpeting that has no polyvinyl chloride, low volatile organic compound paints, PVC-free rubber flooring that requires no harsh chemicals for cleaning or maintenance, and cotton insulation in walls made from recycled cotton and denim.

Dr. Maring, a long-time primary care physician, authored the introduction for a new cookbook, EatingWell in Season: The Farmers’ Market Cookbook, which is released today. In the book, Dr. Maring lays out seven reasons why everyone should use farmers markets as a resource for healthy living.

Kaiser Permanente and a carpet manufacturer joined to create a greener carpet option for use in medical centers. The PVC-free carpet uses instead polyvinyl butyral, the recycled film residue from automotive safety glass. The result is a recycled carpet that meets requirements for health care settings but is also better for the environment.
