Kaiser Permanente’s 2009 Annual Report Now Available Online

Kaiser Permanente’s 2009 annual report — “Health Moves Us” — now is available for online viewing or download.

Throughout, the report tells how health moves us in every sense of the word — physically, mentally and spiritually. It offers a fresh look at what has been the essential story of Kaiser Permanente since it was founded in 1946: The story of talented, caring people who take a holistic view of health care.

To quote from the opening page: “We are fond of giggling babies, busy adults, and robust seniors. We even think teenagers can be pretty cool.”

The report provides a snapshot of Kaiser Permanente’s 2009 successes, and presents statistics for the year. The numbers are impressive: 8.6 million members; 3,500 research and evaluation studies undertaken; 129 million prescriptions filled; $1.7 billion in community benefit contributions.

Among the other highlights of the report:

  • Kaiser Permanente HealthConnect® is the world’s largest private electronic health record, and is now in place for every one of the 8.6 million members. That translated to 21.7 million lab results viewed online, and 1.8 million online requests for appointments.
  • Environment-friendly initiatives resulted in 1,400 pounds of mercury purged from facilities and 50 acres of reflective roofing installed to dramatically reduce cooling costs. Closer to home, farmers markets continue to flourish.
  • Among the 2009 research studies was one that showed a simple, inexpensive combination of generic cholesterol-lowering and blood pressure-reducing drugs can decrease the risk of hospitalization for heart attack or stroke by more than 60 percent.
  • Kaiser Permanente’s clinical scores were among the best in the nation, based on the widely accepted Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set, administered by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. The organization also recognized the Hawaii Region as the nation’s leader in breast cancer screenings, while all eight regions were in the 90th percentile for breast cancer screening for Medicare patients.

To conserve paper and resources, and in alignment with Kaiser Permanente’s commitment to sustainable practices, printed copies of the annual report are limited.
