This year, 5280 Magazine turned to their list of Top Doctors to sort through the important issues and topics dominating the health care reform discussion. Of the nine experts selected to provide insight and break down the terminology, two are leading Kaiser Permanente physicians.

Cardiologist Christopher Lang, MD, was tapped to explain health information technology, given Kaiser Permanente’s extensive experience working with computerized records. He noted: “HIT has the potential to transform medical care by improving the quality, safety, and cost of care.”

John Williams, MD, an allergy and asthma expert, was called upon to discuss the meaning of preventive medicine. He agreed with colleague Christopher Lang, MD, that health information technology is necessary to improve quality care, stating, “Once we invest in primary care and the electronic medical record infrastructure, we will have better preventive care, and, as a result, we’ll have healthier people while decreasing the need for expensive procedures and treatment.”
