Kaiser Permanente Doctor Bikes for a Cause
Physician Raises $12,000 for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
ATLANTA — Earlier this month, Richard Ellin, MD, an internal medicine physician at Kaiser Permanente's Alpharetta Medical Center, participated in "America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride," a 100-mile bike ride around Lake Tahoe that raises funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Dr. Ellin successfully raised more than $12,000 and his team of 22 Georgia riders raised a total of $95,000.
For the past two years, Dr. Ellin has participated in the race in honor of Kaiser Permanente's Dr. Susan Garrison, who was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia in August 2007.
"Dr. Garrison's brave battle against leukemia is to be commended and she is always in my thoughts and prayers," Dr. Ellin said.
Since 1999, Dr. Ellin has completed 10 centuries (100-mile bike rides) and raised more than $94,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The money raised is spent on patient education, direct patient aid, research, education, community services and advocacy.
Dr. Ellin began his 100-mile trek at 6:10 a.m. and finished nine hours and 40 minutes later.
"It was exhausting," he said, "but the weather was beautiful and it's for a great cause."
