Permanente Announces New Board Appointment

ATLANTA — Jeffrey P. Koplan, Vice President of Academic Health Affairs at Emory University’s Woodruff Health Sciences Center, has been named to the Board of Directors of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Georgia, Inc.

Dr. Koplan brings to the board a wealth of experience in medicine and public health. He served as the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 1998 to 2002.  Prior to that, he was President of the Prudential Center for Health Care Research and served in a number of other capacities at the CDC, including Director and Assistant Surgeon General for the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.  

A graduate of Yale College, the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Harvard School of Public Health, Dr. Koplan has worked in the U.S. and internationally on every major public health issue.  He has also written more than 190 scientific papers. He chairs the Institute of Medicine Committee on preventing childhood obesity and is a leader internationally in promoting healthy nutrition and physical activity.

Dr. Koplan joins other well-known Atlanta leaders on the board, including Gregory T. Baranco, owner of Baranco Automotive; J. Veronica Biggins, a principal with Heidrick & Struggles; Laura J. Hardman, a community volunteer; and J. Neal Purcell, retired managing partner at KPMG.

Kaiser Permanente is the state of Georgia's largest nonprofit health plan, serving the health care needs of Atlanta metro area residents for 22 years. Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Georgia, Inc. currently provides comprehensive health care services to approximately 275,000 members through 15 medical facilities in a 28-county service, and a network of affiliated hospitals and physicians. The Health Plan provided more than $5 million in community benefit programs and services.
