Kaiser Permanente Hawaii Announces Phase II of its Moanalua Medical Center Campus Expansion and Renovation Project

Renovation of 158,000 Square Feet of Ancillary Wing Continues Campus Expansion Project to Accommodate Growing Number of Members, Physicians and Staff

HONOLULU — Kaiser Permanente Hawaii announces that Phase II of the expansion and renovation of its Moanalua Medical Center campus will begin this spring with the complete renovation of Moanalua’s six-floor ancillary wing. Renovation will include a refurbishment of 158,000 square feet of space and the addition of more than 80 patient beds, family waiting areas, a meditation room, advanced imaging technology, and an outdoor garden lanai for patients and staff to enjoy. In April 2008, Kaiser Permanente completed Phase I of the project with the unveiling of a new six-story, 134,000-square-foot tower.

“We’re pleased to share that the New Year will bring the continuation of our Moanalua Medical Center expansion and renovation project,” said Susan Murray, Kaiser Permanente’s regional hospital administrator and vice president of Quality and Service. “Phase II of this project will add more private rooms, state-of-the-art imaging technology and other amenities, with design elements including warmer furnishings and soft lighting, all serving to provide high quality care to create a total healing environment.

“Our members expect and deserve newer state-of-the-art facilities, so in addition to creating jobs and planning for growth, this next phase of our expansion and renovation project continues our commitment to making quality care accessible to all. Our members and employees will be pleased when they see the final results,” added Murray.

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii is investing over $140 million in the Phase II renovation of Moanalua Medical Center’s ancillary wing, which is anticipated to be completed late 2011. Phase I was a $130+ million project for a total of approximately $270 million invested in this two-phase project.

Highlights of the ancillary wing renovation include:

  • Addition of 16 private rooms in the neonatal intensive care unit with cardiac monitors to ensure babies who arrive early or who have special needs get the best possible care in rooms large enough to accommodate families
  • Renovated suites for diagnostic imaging
  • 28 new intensive care rooms
  • 40 new and renovated inpatient rooms
  • Addition of a family waiting area on every patient-care floor (3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th)
  • Addition of meditation room (4th floor)
  • Installation of Kaiser Permanente HealthConnect®, Kaiser Permanente’s electronic health record system
  • Installation of a state-of-the-art patient lift system in patient rooms
  • Completely revamped wayfinding system to make it easier to navigate through the hospital

The renovation is intended to continue the look and feel of the new tower at Moanalua Medical Center, which features soft, warm colors and design themes by floor of orchid, kukui, water and bamboo. Design elements conducive to a patient’s recovery include patient rooms with warmer furnishings that depart from more traditional sterile environments. Soft lighting, a comfortable and quiet meditation room, areas that are spacious and decorated in a modern, warm and comfortable way all work together to promote a healing environment. A conversation and waiting area has been added to every floor so that families can be nearby even if they can’t be in a patient’s room. An outdoor garden lanai on the 5th floor with decorative plants, seating and shaded areas will also be available for both patient and staff to enjoy.

Phase I, which broke ground in 2005 and completed in April 2008, and Phase II of the Moanalua Medical Center expansion and renovation project, are the first major renovations since the medical center opened in 1985. When the Moana Medical Center first opened, it offered approximately 240 patient beds. Upon completion of Phase II, more than 300 beds will be available at the Moanalua campus.

Recently, as an added service for those who need the convenience, valet parking has been made available at the porte-cochere of the Moanalua Medical Center.
