Kaiser Permanente to Open New Medical Office on Capitol Hill

State-of-the-art facility will showcase advanced health care technology and provide expert, coordinated care

ROCKVILLE, Md. – Kaiser Permanente, a leading not-for-profit health plan and care provider, has signed a lease for 200,000 square feet of space in the Station Place complex adjacent to Union Station. The new medical office will open in the complex in early 2011.

"We're confident that all of our members who use the Capitol Hill Medical Office, both those who live in D.C. and those who come in to the city to work, will enjoy the convenience and comfort that the new facility will bring," said Marilyn Kawamura, president, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Mid-Atlantic States. "It will be a cornerstone of health for the community, and a hallmark for customer service and quality care."

Located at 700 Second Street, Northeast, the new Kaiser Permanente Capitol Hill Medical Office will house primary care, specialty care, full-service imaging, laboratory, pharmacy services, and an outpatient procedures suite—all supported by industry-leading technology and information systems. For instance, Kaiser Permanente HealthConnect®, the most advanced electronic medical record system available today, helps clinicians provide outstanding quality, assists patients in making certain they have received the preventive care they require, and maximizes patient safety by identifying risks to patients, such as potentially harmful drug combinations. Patients also have the added convenience of being able to access their medical records, make appointments, send secure e-mail to their physicians, and order prescription refills online, through My Health Manager at kp.org.

"With the opening of the Capitol Hill Medical Office, Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States is in a position to become a leading provider of health care on the East Coast, and a model for how health care should be delivered across the nation," said Robert Pearl, MD, president and CEO of the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, "This new facility will embody Kaiser Permanente's commitment to providing exceptional quality in the most effective and convenient ways possible."

Kaiser Permanente's Capitol Hill Medical Office will showcase how coordinating health care and leveraging the power of advanced information technologies allow physicians to achieve superior quality outcomes. Kaiser Permanente selected the Station Place site after a comprehensive review of development options in Washington, D.C. The proximity to many of our members – including those in the federal workforce, public transportation, and Capitol Hill, as well as key building amenities such as ample parking for members – made this location the first choice.

"From the health care providers' view," noted Bernadette Loftus, MD, The Permanente Medical Group associate executive director for the Mid-Atlantic States, "the seamless collaboration between primary, specialty, and diagnostic care, convenience, and expanded access, along with the modern infrastructure and design efficiencies planned for the new facility, will allow us to provide exceptional medical care and help our members to manage their health."

Owned and developed by Louis Dreyfus Property Group and Fisher Brothers, Station Place was designed by Pritzker award-winning architect Kevin Roche.
