Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals President and COO L. Dale Crandall to leave the organization

OAKLAND, Calif. – L. Dale Crandall, president and chief operating officer of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, will leave Kaiser Permanente next month, concluding his four-year tenure at the nation's largest non-profit health care organization.

"Serving the members, employees and physicians of Kaiser Permanente has been a rewarding and fulfilling experience," Crandall said. "I leave knowing that Kaiser Permanente has the capability and the leadership to continue providing quality health care, serving our communities and managing our resources for the long term."

Joining Kaiser Permanente in 1998 as chief financial officer, Crandall was quickly promoted to lead the organization's financial and operational turnaround. Crandall's leadership was instrumental in the organization's financial recovery and return to its long-standing stability.

"Dale's insight, leadership and ability to make tough decisions has been exactly what Kaiser Permanente needed to get through some very tough times," said George C. Halvorson, the organization's new chairman and CEO. Halvorson will take over the president's responsibilities. "I personally feel fortunate to start my role at Kaiser Permanente in the strong and positive environment made possible by Dale's leadership, and I intend to carry on with his focus on solid strategic planning, operational performance, and financial responsibility."

Prior to his service at Kaiser Permanente, Crandall was chief financial officer and treasurer at APL Limited. Previously, he was PriceWaterhouse Southern California Managing Partner. After a hiatus this summer, Crandall intends to pursue other senior management level opportunities.

"Dale is a great leader and a partner of the highest level," said David M. Lawrence, MD, Kaiser's former chairman and CEO, now serving as chairman emeritus. "We will dearly miss the contribution he makes to the organization. Wherever Dale's future plans take him, all of us at Kaiser Permanente wish him the best."
