Preschoolers turn off TV and turn on to the natural world

PORTLAND, Ore. – Close to 30 preschool children recently left behind their television cartoon watching to get a closeup look at snakes, bugs, leaves and other wonders at the Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge in Portland's Sellwood neighborhood.

The excursion in late April was part of National TV Turnoff Week, co-sponsored locally by Kaiser Permanente, which paid for each child to participate for free. A guide with Portland Parks & Recreation Environmental Education led the Portland-area youngsters and their adult companions on the Ladybug Walk. Similar walks to a variety of local natural areas will continue most Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 29. For more information, call 503-823-3601.
