African American high school seniors can apply for $1,000 scholarships from Kaiser Permanente employee group

PORTLAND, Ore. – Any African American high school senior seeking a career in health care can apply for one of several $1,000 scholarships being offered this spring by members of the African American Association of Kaiser Permanente Northwest.

To be eligible, applicants must be full-time students enrolled for the 2005 fall term or semester at an accredited private or public, non-profit, two-year or four-year college or university. Applicants must also submit a certified transcript from their high school showing at least a 3.0 grade point average.

Along with their application, students must write a personal essay of no more than 500 words about why they are inspired to pursue a career in health care. They must also submit two signed letters of reference from two different people. One must be from a teacher, counselor or administrator at the school where the student is currently enrolled. The other can be from a person familiar with the student and his or her character and aspirations, such as a minister, employer, community leader, teacher or business person. Applicants should include information about any past or current volunteering they’ve done in the community. Please submit one original and six copies of all documents.

Mailed applications must be postmarked by May 23, 2005 . Applications postmarked after that date cannot be considered.

Recipients of the scholarship will be notified in late May. Scholarships will be presented at an awards ceremony that will be held the first week in June in the Portland area. Scholarship recipients should be prepared to give a two to three minute acceptance speech.
