Kaiser Permanente staff to honor spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. by volunteering at 16 Northwest social-service agencies Jan. 16

PORTLAND, Ore. – Kaiser Permanente staff will be commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday Monday, Jan. 16 by volunteering at 16 sites from Longview, Wash. to Salem, Ore., including several sites in the Portland-Vancouver area. Volunteers are being paid by Kaiser Permanente to spend half a day providing service to various health clinics, food banks, social-service agencies and public schools. Volunteers will serve in many ways, including:

  • providing medical, dental and optical care to the uninsured;
  • sorting and boxing food at food banks;
  • building permanent housing for low-income families;
  • giving health presentations for Latino children in public housing;
  • cleaning donated bicycles for reuse at a community cycling center;
  • assisting frail elders with yard work and housekeeping.

Kaiser Permanente staff will be volunteering at the following locations in the Portland-Vancouver area:

Portland

  • Wallace Medical Concern
    800 SE 181st Avenue
    1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
    Provide free medical care to the uninsured (donations are requested to support the clinic but no one will be turned away for lack of money).

  • Kaiser Permanente North Interstate Services Building dental clinic
    7201 N. Interstate Avenue
    9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Provide free dental care to uninsured schoolchildren.

  • Community Cycling Center
    1700 NE Alberta Street
    9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 4:30 p.m.
    Cleaning donated bicycles for reuse.

  • Oregon Food Bank
    7900 NE 33rd Drive
    9 to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.
    Sorting and repackaging food for distribution.

  • David Douglas School District
    1500 SE 130th
    9 a.m. to noon
    Prepare school library books for cataloging and covering.

  • Pleasant Valley Grade School
    17625 SE Foster Road
    8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Medical director and his family will be among volunteers painting school bathrooms.

  • Ventura Park Elementary School
    145 SE 117th Avenue
    Pain conflict-management circles and do maintenance work on greenhouse.

Hillsboro

  • Willamette West Habitat for Humanity
    7202 SE Lindsay Lane (off SE 73rd and Tualatin Valley Highway)
    Hillsboro
    Help complete housing for families without homes of their own.

  • Western Farm Workers
    725 SE 7th Avenue
    Hillsboro
    10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
    Distribute food, clothes and hygiene items to needy families.

Tigard

  • Loaves and Fishes
    8815 SW O'Mara
    9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Refurbish a senior citizens center.

Vancouver

  • Free Clinic of Southwest Washington
    4100 Plomondon Street
    Provide free health care to uninsured.

  • Vancouver Volunteer Chores Services
    725 SE 7th Avenue
    Assist seniors and light housekeeping and yard work.
