Kaiser Permanente San Diego Honors Martin Luther King Jr. with Annual Day of Volunteerism

SAN DIEGO – In honor and recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the values he espoused, and his contributions to the nation and the world in advancing civil and human rights, Kaiser Permanente in 2006 established an annual Day of Volunteerism on the King Holiday. This Monday, January 21, 2008, Kaiser Permanente employees will spend the day at the San Diego Food Bank, cleaning, sorting, bagging, and boxing food items for distribution to those in need.

"We hope that other San Diego organizations will join us in using the MLK holiday as an opportunity to volunteer in the community," said Dr. Arthur M. Flippin, area medical director for Kaiser Permanente in San Diego. "There is a great demand for volunteers at local nonprofits, shelters, schools, hospitals, senior centers and churches throughout the San Diego community."

WHAT: In honor of MLK Day, Kaiser Permanente employees will volunteer at the San Diego Food Bank – sorting and packaging food for those in need.

WHEN: Monday, January 21, 2008 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. (noon–1:30 p.m. Lunch and Recognition Program)

WHERE: San Diego Food Bank, 9850 Distribution Ave., San Diego, Calif. 92121

Live Broadcast and Photo Opportunity: Dozens of volunteers will be working throughout the day at the San Diego Food Bank – sorting and packaging hundreds of pounds of food items for distribution by the Food Bank.
