Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center Named ‘Top Hospital for Emergency Medicine’ in Nation

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. — Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center has been named a 2012  “Top Hospital for Emergency Medicine” in a national list by HealthGrades, a leading provider of comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center is among 263 hospitals performing in the top 5 percent nationwide that were designated as Emergency Medicine Excellence Award hospitals. A full listing of these hospitals, by city, can be found online at HealthGrades.com.

“We are extremely pleased to receive this designation,” said Shirley Suda, MD, area medical director of Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center. “Our inclusion in HealthGrades’ list of Top Hospitals for Emergency Medicine in the country underscores our commitment to the very highest standards in quality of care and safety for our patients.”

“This honor further demonstrates our caregivers’ commitment to ‘evidence-based medicine,’ which follows protocols that are proven to have better outcomes,” says Garo Balkian, MD, chief of Emergency Medicine for Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center. “That means we have access to the best knowledge of how to treat stroke and other life-threatening conditions.”

The findings are based on an analysis of more than 7 million Medicare patient records from 2008 to 2010. HealthGrades’ “Emergency Medicine in American Hospitals” report analyzed patients admitted to the hospital through the emergency department for the following 12 diagnoses:

  • Bowel Obstruction
  • Pancreatitis
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Pneumonia
  • Diabetic Acidosis and Coma
  • Pulmonary Embolism
  • Gastrointestinal Bleed
  • Respiratory Failure
  • Heart Attack
  • Sepsis
  • Heart Failure
  • Stroke

The HealthGrades report included only those patients admitted to the hospital from the emergency room for further medical treatment, representing the full continuum of a patient’s care.
