POSITION PURPOSE: Under the direction of the OR/Recovery Room staff, the Escort Volunteer provides assistance and information to incoming surgical patients and their family members, physicians and O/R and Pre/Op staff.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: All volunteers must attend Volunteer Orientation, sign a Confidentiality statement, complete health testing and security photo identification, and wear appropriate uniform when on duty. Volunteers must be in good health and must follow Kaiser Permanente rules. A trained volunteer provides orientation to the HSC Escort volunteer.
Ability to speak clearly and be understood in the English language.

* Ability to obtain information from family and staff unobtrusively.
* Ability to calm others and stay functional in a busy, emotional setting.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FACTORS:
* Hearing and sight must be adequate with or without accommodation to carry
out duties.
* Ability to walk 1/4 mile up to 4 times per day.
* Ability to lift and carry up to 10 pounds.
* Ability to hear and speak clearly for staff, patient and visitor contact.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
5:30am volunteer:
* Pick up volunteer patient schedule in Preop.
* Transfer cancellations, additions, any changes from Pre/op Schedule to Volunteer
Schedule.
* Immediately assign lockers and plastic bag for clothes for all 7:45 (first
case) pts.
Continue as follows:
* Obtain copy of surgical schedule from 5:30 escort and keep it current as patients
are admitted.
* Upon receipt of consent form, post time on consent form to surgical schedule.
* Assign locker and plastic bag for clothes.
* When patient is called post the time to patient sign-in sheet.
* Greet and escort patient to dressing area and instruct on proper surgery attire.
* Inform family they will be called to visit patient after all pre-op work is
completed.
* Post consent time to Pre-Op surgery schedule.
* Pull patient chart, attach consent form and leave at patient’s table.
* Tape bed nametag to bed and post bed number to volunteer surgery schedule.
* Escort patient to bed and see that patient is comfortable.
* Keep schedule covered at all times.
* Volunteer leaving at 12:30 completes information on Patient Escort Form 03162
and turns it in at Hospital Information Desk.
* Tear up and dispose of surgery schedule.
* Assist in training new volunteers.
* Understand and follow strict confidentiality guidelines.
