The Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek Medical Center opened
in September 1953 as a ranch-style hospital with visitor access
to each patient room through private patios. Today, the original
hospital has been completely redesigned with a modern Medical
Center housing a High Risk Labor and Deliver Unit (LDR), a
Level III Tertiary Neonatal ICU, and a 32-bed Maternity Unit
that practices mother/baby couplet care. Demand for emergency
services has increased dramatically resulting in a major expansion
of our Emergency Department. The expanded Emergency Department
opened in November 2003 with 52 treatment bays, almost doubling
its former capacity. The center includes:
A hospital with 229 licensed beds
Over 240 Physicians
Over 730 Nurses
Over 300 Medical Support Staff
Service to over 340,000 members
Programs
The Walnut Creek facility offers comprehensive inpatient,
emergency, outpatient, prevention, and health education services.
The inpatient setting includes Critical Care and Medical/Surgical
services with a specialty focus in Respiratory, Oncology,
and Neurology.
The Neurology Unit has received a Best Practice Award
in the care of CVA patients.
A Physician Medical Director oversees care in each unit
and works in close collaboration with the RN staff.
The Perinatal Services Department has earned the prestigious
Centers of Excellence status for its Level III NICU and
High Risk Labor and Delivery Unit.
There is a full service neonatal transport program to
accommodate the needs of the high-risk neonates of the Greater
Bay Area.
In 1999, the Perioperative Services moved into ten new
surgical suites offering the latest advanced surgical technology
in both inpatient and ambulatory services.
The Surgical Unit specializes in orthopedic and advanced
endoscopic surgeries.
The Emergency Department supports innovative practices
including:
A Chest Pain Program that reduced one-day admission stays
by over 50 percent from 1999 to 2002.
The development of nursing protocols, which allow nurses
to initiate care when time is critical.
An Observation Unit within the Emergency Department, which
provides patients with extended nursing time.
The integration of discharge planning personnel within
the Emergency Department to access resources for appropriate
patient placement following treatment and stabilization.
