The program is designed for nurses in NICU training positions, with a concurrent preceptorship. Classes are open to other interested staff as space allows.
DESCRIPTION
This 8-day program builds on the "Neonatal Basics/NICU Phase I" course. It is designed for nurses in an NICU Training Program as a didactic course that supplements clinical preceptorships that are held at the individual facilities. The course will review each system, common diseases and problems of the neonate and current evidenced-based nursing care.

REQUIREMENTS
Program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP 2365 for 48 contact hours.
Class size is limited to 40 participants.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this program, the participant will be able to:
Discuss nursing assessment and management of infants with various respiratory diseases
Incorporate developmentally supportive care into the care of high risk infants
Identify common cyanotic and acyanotic cardiac lesions in the neonate
Discuss the rationale for commonly prescribed medications in the neonate
Identify abnormalities of the GI system and the nursing care of infants after GI surgical procedures
Outline nursing interventions that promote skin integrity in the very low birth weight infant
Discuss sign/symptoms and nursing management of common renal problems
Analyze common laboratory test results, including blood gases
Demonstrate effective communication and cultural sensitivity with parents of infants in the NICU
Identify infants at risk for developing seizures and other neurological problems
