| TARGET AUDIENCE
Participants must be licensed registered nurses with a scheduled preceptorship in pediatrics. This course content is appropriate for nurses who are new to pediatric and adolescent hospital care. Concurrent clinical experience in Pediatrics with a pediatric nurse preceptor or greater than 200 hours (20 twelve hour shifts or 25 eight hour shifts) of clinical experience in hospital pediatric medical and surgical care is strongly recommended. Consideration will be given to those without concurrent or previous clinical experience if appealed in writing to course coordinator.
DESCRIPTION
This 10 day didactic course focuses on the care of the pediatric patient within the hospital. A variety of learning experiences, including lecture, case study, and simulation, provide the new or experienced pediatric nurse with evidenced based clinical information to provide care to children with both acute and chronic conditions certification examination, Perioperative nurses who care for pediatric patients, or nurses interested in floating to a pediatric unit.
CENTRAL OBJECTIVE
Upon completion of this course, the student will have the knowledge to care for a pediatric patient with a variety of healthcare disorders and concerns. The student will understand the critical elements to care for the child and family.

- Assess a pediatric patient and identify any abnormal assessment that should be referred to medical staff and/or to the pediatric charge nurse. Demonstrate assessment techniques using simulation.
- Identify the basic nursing needs of a pediatric patient and family admitted to a hospital.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of various pediatric disorders and medical and nursing management of these disorders. The nurse should be able to apply topics learned to care for the pediatric patient with these problems.
- Demonstrate the ability to manage a pediatric patient who is in distress using simulation.
- Understand the unique needs necessary when caring for a child with a chronic or life threatening condition.
- Discuss nursing resources, including journals and organizations, which may be helpful to the nurse in continuing their education in nursing.
- Research pediatric literature to find information about best practices in pediatrics.
- Apply knowledge of ethics to the management of an ethical situation faced in the nurse's practice.
- Communicate critical information about a patient in a brief manner using SBAR techniques.
- Evaluate clinical and class self-performance in relation to established personal objectives set at the initiation of classes.
ADDITIONAL EDUCATION AVAILABLE
Also helpful may be the Neonatal Basics/NICU Phase I class, for the care of the newborn, which in addition to newborn assessment and care, includes two days for stabilization for transport and the didactic portion of NRP. This course is available, to non Labor and Delivery or NICU nurses, as space permits.

This program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP 2365 for 72 contact hours.
