RNs who are being precepted in a position on a telemetry/cardiac monitored unit. Concurrent clinical experience is strongly recommended. Enrollment is at the discretion of the manager.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Telemetry/CMU Training Program is designed to introduce the new grad and experienced RN to the care of the telemetry patient. The didactic program is overseen by NCAL Patient Care Services and consists of 30 classroom hours supported by in-class exercises, case studies, and study tools. An EKG rhythm Interpretation class is required concurrently unless the nurse is able to provide evidence of prior study and competency. The final class day is an interactive day utilizing the concepts of critical thinking to recognize and respond to the deteriorating patient.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this Program, the learner will be able to:
State the signs and symptoms of the major electrolyte imbalances.
Describe the significance of "acute" versus "chronic" renal failure.
Describe the clinical features, medical & nursing management of stroke.
Discuss appropriate assessment and nursing care for the patient with: Acute Coronary Syndrome, heart failure and valvular dysfunction (insufficiency, stenosis)
Describe the determinants of cardiac output.
Discuss the clinical significance of the following hemodynamic parameters: heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), central venous pressure (CVP).
Discuss various vasoactive and antiarrhythmic medications, their actions and potential side effects.
Identify the use of, indications, contraindications and adverse reactions for various inhaled respiratory drugs.
Identify indications for and the use of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation
The Telemetry Training Program is provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP 2365 for 30 contact hours. There is no charge for this class for NCAL Kaiser nurses.
