Nurse Practitioner (NP) Mentoring
Program The intent of the NP
Mentoring Program
is to make the newly hired nurse practitioner (NP) sufficiently
familiar with the Kaiser system and to have achieved a level
of competency in the new role. Please
note that the role of a NP mentor differs from the role of
a NP preceptor.A NP preceptor
is a nurse practitioner who provides clinical experience and
guidance to nurse practitioner students during the course
of their educational program.
Mentor: An experienced nurse practitioner who assumes
responsibility for promoting the professional growth and development
of a less experienced nurse practitioner (mentee) by fostering
insight, identifying needed knowledge and enhancing that NPs
professional development. In the event there are no NPs to
assume a mentor role then a physician or other appropriate
clinician may serve as the mentor.
Mentee: A less experienced nurse practitioner who is paired
with a mentor for the purposes of observing and learning from
the more experienced nurse practitioner
Neophyte
NP Mentoring Program:
The intent of the mentoring program is to make the newly hired
nurse practitioner (NP) sufficiently familiar with the Kaiser
system and to have achieved a level of competency in the new
role. The expectation at the end of the mentoring period is
that she/he is able to fully function as a member of the health
care team.
RN Preceptor Backfill Program Our California Preceptor Program insures that every
new graduate nurse employed in California receives the best
instruction possible. All new hires in California who are
participating in a training program go through a clinical
orientation with a preceptor. This program was put together
over a number of years and developed to meet our nurses' changing
needs. The preceptor's responsibilities include informing,
instructing, teaching, coaching, observing, evaluating, and
supporting preceptees during their orientation and socialization
into their new role.
The Individual Preceptor
Model provides time for preceptors
to spend with new nurses during the first seven weeks of clinical
orientation.
The
Cluster Orientation Model provides an initial precepted
clinical orientation for from three to ten neophyte nurses
at one time.
