Cover Fall 2001

"Sunrise at Oxbow Bend"
by Richard Mittleman, MD

"Sunrise at Oxbow Bend" was captured in October at Oxbow Bend in the Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. Dr Mittleman woke an hour before sunrise to wait until well past sunrise in the dark, cold, and rain. As he was about to "pack it in," there was a break in the clouds. The sun, well above the horizon, illuminated the row of Aspen trees. "This image is magical. The experience was religious."

Dr Mittleman has been a Pediatrician with SCPMG for over 27 years. He has had images published in Birder's World Magazine three times, had an image selected in the Pfizer Calendar contest, and exhibited work at the last annual Pediatric Education Conference.

All the bird images are of free and wild birds. Many extraordinary wildlife images seen in publications today are captive animals in settings that make them appear to be wild.

More of Dr Mittleman's photography can be seen in the Soul of the Healer section.
