In 1913, Arthur
Wynne, a British born journalist, created the first crossword puzzle
for an American newspaper called the New York World. It was called a
"word-cross." It was based on a similar, much older game,
played in ancient Pompeii, called Magic Squares or word square. The
word square: "Sator Acrostic" was possibly used during Roman
times as a secret sign to indicate the home or place of a Christian
family or safe house.
The first crossword
puzzles were primarily published for children but developed into an
adult pastime when,
in the 1920s, it was realized that they could sell newspapers. It was
during this time that crossword puzzles attained the familiar appearance
they have today.
