Note from the
Director
Welcome to our website and
to Research & Evaluation
We hope that you will explore these pages as an introduction to our scientists,
our teams and the research in which we are engaged.
It's been a busy and exciting year for our group.
We've renewed several key grants that will allow us to continue our work in childhood diabetes and in
the prevention and treatment of cancer. We’ve also launched new initiatives related to vaccine safety
and pharmacoepidemiology and have worked to cultivate partnerships with research groups in academic
institutions and other managed care organizations. We have been building systems to take advantage of HealthConnect, our new electronic health record, as it rolls out and have been developing systems
and procedures to improve our efficiency and to ensure compliance with policies and regulations.
As we look to the year ahead, we plan to expand our opportunities and capabilities for translational research through integrated growth of our group.

-
We are beginning to realize the fruits of our efforts in recruiting and will be adding new
scientists and staff through the year. This will allow us to expand our portfolio of behavioral,
epidemiologic and health services research.
-
We will continue to enhance our infrastructure as we expand our capabilities with HealthConnect and other
electronic infrastructure to support our research programs in the Southern California Region. And as we
do this, we will continue to develop standard operating procedures and guidelines to make it easier for
researchers in the Region to focus on the science.
-
We will continue to cultivate our partnerships with outside organizations. Our collaborations with academic
institutions applying for the Clinical and Translational Science Awards hold great promise for expanding our
research capabilities. We hope to strengthen our ties with other academic partners as well.
It will be an active and productive year with these efforts. And through these, we will better position ourselves
to fulfill our vision of playing a vital role in the success of Kaiser Permanente Southern California through
the conduct of high quality, innovative research directed to improve the health of KPSC members and the populations
from which they are drawn.
In closing,
I urge you to explore the descriptions of our programs. We are all very excited about our
contributions, how we fit into Kaiser Permanente Southern California and how we
contribute to science and the improvement of health care through high quality
epidemiologic and health services research.
